About McDowell House Museum and Apothecary

Come visit the former home and office of Dr. Ephraim McDowell, now a National Historic Landmark. Here on Christmas morning 1809, Dr. McDowell performed surgery on Jane Todd Crawford for the removal of an ovarian tumor. This was the first successful removal of an ovarian tumor in the world. The museum is furnished and features a wonderful collection of antiques including early medical equipment. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-3:30pm, and Sunday 2-3:30pm.
